Symposium performativ I

Solo performance in a gallery for Nicolas Simeha, opera singer Experiment on the scenographic plasticity of the performer’s body.
If an opera singer sings in an art gallery and if the audience can sit or stand as they wish, observe from a distance or from close up, remain still or in movement, is it then an opera or an exhibition? A play or a performance? Are we to act as spectators or visitors? Where does the focus lie and who is this person? A performer, a singer, an actor, or a sculpture?
CONCEPT AND INTENTION “It is perhaps on this stage that we represent all, that we make appear all our representations.” J.L Nancy, la Communaute des œuvre.
A short form, the length of a Lied, develops in variations of play during two hours. The narration remains perpetually open in order to exhaust the potential of a dramatic situation by composition, decomposition and recomposition in variations, successions and juxtapositions
As the drama unfolds, originating in his body and encompassing the totality of its capacities, Nicolas experiments with the notion of « playing the actor ».
The gallery is a meeting space of experiments and reality. The project consists in playing with what constitutes the state of representation by creating a dramatic image in the gallery space. The Schleifmühlgasse 12-14 gallery has a 5.5 m wide and 3.8 m high showcase – a glass screen that transforms play into an image. A row of chairs shall be placed on the pavement facing the shop window, directing the gaze of those seated outside towards the interior while the open gallery door invites passersby to enter.
In both configurations, the public both inside and outside the gallery will become part of the image directed by Nicolas and will fragment the popu- lated space in various combinations.

THE RULES OF THE GAME
When Nicolas becomes aware that his play unravels an image, he expands the dramatic situation in a particular direction and from there the rules establish themselves.
Everyone must have access to the rules of the game: the relationship between the rules and the game must be permeable. A random score inviting different levels of presence will suggest combinations of play.
Clothing: first layer, social basis Costume: first manifestation of representation, play Disguise: played play Clowning: play on play
The assigned tasks will be communicated on the day of the performance

KOMMLABOR

by Anna Watzinger und Andrea Seelich
17.9. 4pm
